Arenal Lodge (200 meters/658 feet after Arenal Lake Dam,restaurant, full breakfast included). If you ever wondered what was above the clouds, turn into the entrance of Arenal Lodge, just over the dam at the east end of the lake. Follow the serpentine brick road up through a cloud forest to the top of a mountain. Half the fun of Arenal Lodge (not to be confused with Arenal Observatory Lodge) is driving up their very good – but very steep – road through the cloud forest. Four-wheel-drive is strongly recommended. The lodge’s economy rooms (sans view) are pleasant, with one queen and one single bed. If it’s rainy season, which is actually high season around Arenal, you won’t miss not having a view from your room. The popular junior suites are very large and comfortably appointed, with wooden balconies that overlook tropical gardens, with the lake and the volcano in the distance. Fruit bird feeders in the gardens attract scores of colorful song and hummingbirds. Swiss-style chalets, complete with fireplaces and balconies, sit on the very crest of the mountaintop. They cost just a little more than the junior suites. Free shuttle bus to the hot springs and La Fortuna town.
